For the legislative week ending March 27

Date: March 27, 2015

This week the Senate has been closing out its budget subcommittees and is preparing to hear the budget in its Finance Committee next week. The Senate has the marijuana bill on the floor with an expectation of acting on the bill on Monday. Both houses have been hearing Medicaid expansion and reform in their Health and Social Services Committees.
Other action on bills of interest to small businesses:
  • Senate Bill 5, relating to restitution, passed the Senate and has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee.
  • House Bill 6 and Senate Bill 2 were both amended to apply only to allowing a veterans employment preference by private employers. These were both amended to remove of inclusion of spouse or domestic partner. Small businesses were concerned particularly about the difficulty of determining who might be a domestic partner.
  • House Bill 114, which would allow a workers’ compensation benefit to be paid to a worker’s estate, was heard and held in the House Labor & Commerce Committee. You can read here NFIB’s letter of opposition.
  • House Bill 155 was introduced and scheduled for hearing on April 2. NFIB sent a letter of concern. This bill would remove several allowances for collecting state fees. As a principle, NFIB took the position that the state should not foist the cost of their revenue collection on small businesses.
